To combat air emissions, MARPOL Annex VI established a global fuel sulphur cap, as well as stricter regulation in Emission Control Areas (ECAs). The legislation refers to fuel sulphur levels, but compliance is also possible by cleaning SOx from the exhaust gas using a scrubber system.
MARPOL Annex VI limits the allowed sulphur content of marine fuels. As of January 1st, 2020 there is a global cap of 0.50%S, while a 0.10%S limit applies in ECAs.
The aim is to keep harmful sulphur oxides (SO2 and SO3) from being released into the air. The IMO allows higher-sulphur fuels to be used with SOx scrubbers, which achieve the same result by cleaning the exhaust gas.
Today, you have several options to comply with the regulations. The three most common are:
Allows continued use of economical HFO
Initial investment cost, payback depending on fuel prices
Low investment cost
Higher long-term costs than using HFO with a scrubber
Always in SOx compliance
